Why Many Students Are Afraid to Speak English

Many students want to speak English, but they feel afraid. This fear is very common, especially among school students in Sri Lanka. One main reason is the fear of making mistakes. Students think others will laugh at them if they say something wrong. Because of this fear, they choose to stay silent even when they know the answer.

Another reason is lack of practice. Most students learn English only inside the classroom. They study grammar and write exercises, but they do not get many chances to speak. When speaking time comes, they feel nervous because English sounds strange to them. Speaking a new language needs practice, just like learning to ride a bicycle.

Teachers also play an important role. Sometimes students are corrected too much when they speak. When every mistake is corrected immediately, students lose confidence. They start to think that speaking English is very difficult. A friendly and supportive classroom can help students feel safe to speak.

To reduce fear, students should start speaking in small ways. They can speak with friends, talk to themselves in English, or practice in front of a mirror. Teachers can use games, pair work, and drama activities to make speaking fun. Mistakes should be treated as part of learning, not as a problem.

Speaking English is a skill that grows slowly. With encouragement, practice, and a positive environment, students can overcome their fear and speak English with confidence.

  1. What makes you afraid to speak English? I feel afraid to speak English because I worry about making mistakes. Sometimes I get nervous that others might not understand me or might laugh at my pronunciation. I also feel shy speaking in front of people, and I lack confidence in my vocabulary. These things make me hesitate to speak English.
